Top legislator stresses high-quality development of people's

LANZHOU, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Zhao Leji, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, has stressed the need to uphold the overall leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) over the work of people's congresses and promote the high-quality development of people's congress work.

Zhao, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks during an inspection tour in northwest China's Gansu Province from Wednesday to Friday.

During the tour, Zhao visited grassroots legislative outreach platforms, enterprises, research institutes and rural communities, where he exchanged views with lawmakers and local residents. He called on deputies to fulfill their duties in accordance with the law, maintain close ties with the people, and help address issues of public concern.

While inspecting local people's congress organs, Zhao underscored the need to improve oversight work by adhering to the principles of conducting oversight in the right direction, with tangible results and in accordance with the law. He called for further translating the strengths of the people's congress system into governance effectiveness.

Zhao also urged local authorities to ensure the orderly and law-based election of county- and township-level people's congresses in line with the decisions and arrangements of the CPC Central Committee.

He also stressed efforts to strengthen flood control, drought relief, post-disaster reconstruction and workplace safety to safeguard people's lives and property.
