Damascus, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian People's Assembly held its first meeting since the political upheaval in Syria in 2024 on July 12, electing a speaker, two vice speakers, and a secretary.
At this meeting, members of parliament collectively swore in before the President of the Syrian Transitional Government, Ahmed Sala, and then voted to elect Abdul Hamid Awak as Speaker of the Parliament.
According to the Syrian State News Agency, Avak is a member of the Constitutional Declaration Drafting Committee and served as an advisory judge in the Syrian Ministry of Justice from 1998 to 2014.
The Syrian People's Assembly has a total of 210 seats, with one-third appointed directly by Shara and two-thirds elected by regional electoral colleges.
The Syrian People's Assembly Election High Committee announced on July 1st the list of 70 People's Assembly members appointed by Shara. Thus, the list of all 210 members of the Syrian People's Assembly has been confirmed by the committee.
