Havana, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Cuban Foreign Minister Rodriguez issued a statement on social media on July 8, thanking 136 countries for supporting the debate on ending the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba at the United Nations General Assembly plenary session held on July 7.
The statement said that Cuba sincerely thanks the representatives of member states who spoke at the UN General Assembly and condemned the serious humanitarian consequences caused by the US measures against Cuba to the Cuban people. Against the backdrop of unprecedented pressure from the United States, it is of great significance for these countries to firmly uphold their positions on peace, multilateralism, the United Nations, and international law.
Rodriguez reiterated in the statement, "Cuba is not a threat. The real threat is the blockade
The United Nations General Assembly held a plenary session on the 7th to debate the issue of ending the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba. At the beginning of the meeting, the representative of the United States spoke on the meeting procedure, smearing the Cuban government and opposing the UN General Assembly's further debate on this issue, demanding a vote on whether to continue with the meeting agenda for that day. But subsequently, the United Nations decided to continue the debate with a vote of 136 in favor, 9 against, and 30 abstentions.
After the victory of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the US government adopted a hostile policy towards Cuba. In 1962, the United States imposed an economic, financial, and trade embargo on Cuba. Since 1992, the United Nations General Assembly has annually reviewed a draft resolution proposed by Cuba calling for the lifting of the US blockade, which has received overwhelming support over the years.
